Residential Schools

Each country is ashamed of something. Canada is ashamed of residential schools. They were horrible. Some very bad things happened to more than 150,000 children who were put into residential schools. Not only were they taken from their families, but they weren’t allowed to speak their own language or practice their own faith. They were often physically abused and got diseases without the needed medical care and medicine.
In class, we are learning about residential schools. My teacher got us to write down on paper things that were important to us. Day by day he started taking off those papers. He said that when we got to this place all these things that were important to us would be gone. At the end of the week, all the papers were gone. That made me realize how lucky I am to be able to do all these amazing things. I couldn’t imagine how horrible it would be to be taken away from your family and be sent to a school like that. I’m happy these things have changed and there are no longer any schools left.
